St. Finian’s medieval church: oral history recordings, night photos, tour.
Hear about the recent survey from an archaeologist, take night photos, record memories of Lucan’s graveyards: BOOK YOUR TICKET HERE
In this 1.5-2 hour evening workshop*, Society for Old Lucan (SOL) will share St. Finian’s medieval church & graveyard at night with followers and give them an opportunity to receive training in graveyard surveys, record oral history of Lucan’s graveyards, and try out night-photography methods to add to the online survey of the graveyard. We are particularly interested in members attending, who previously surveyed the gravestones and transcribed the inscriptions, but the event is open to all followers of SOL so come along!.
- Attend a short talk at the site to hear observations and information that archaeologist John Tierney has about the graveyard of St. Finian’s, including what the headstones reveal about the site, reading the headstones, iconography and what it means, the surnames of the site.
- We particularly want YOU, our followers, to attend so we can record your memories, stories or local legends about the old graveyards in Lucan. We will show you how to record, using your smartphone. Your stories can be of St. Finian’s., the village graveyard, or Old Esker cemetery. If you’d like to take part, add your name here, and we can record you on the night at St. Finian’s – https://docs.google.com/forms/d/11UndaVVWhb-Yp858WgocCr4gceAt7zUasKcKumhl8vU/edit?ts=63159013
- We’ll demonstrate night-time photography methods to maximise capturing detail of the 18th – 19th C gravestones. You’ll get a chance to try these out using your camera or smartphone too to get some high-contrast photos of the 18th and 19th century headstones in the graveyard. We’ll be asking you to add your photo for our listing for the site on “Historic Graves” – see link https://historicgraves.com/graveyard/st-finian-s-esker-church/du-stfi
